The making of U 2003-04In December 2003, the band set up gear in Charles Fisher's garage/studio and began laying down guide tracks. Everyone was excited to finally be working on a record. Even though there was no money to fund tracking in a big room and mixing, the band believed that this was the start and somehow recources would be provided. It was great to be working with a producer with Charles' track record and basic tracking went extremely well. Charles felt strongly that they had at least two songs with potential to become big singles. In April 2004, a sense of deja vu was felt when the band realised the recordings didn't sound like a band. The drums had been replaced and the heart and soul of OCIANIC was missing. Why was it so difficult to make recordings that sounded like four guys playing in a room? Charles was right in the respect that they weren't the typical band. They hadn't toured constantly for years and honed a sound, but the heart and soul of OCIANIC was in the songs, the voice and the dream of playing those songs on stage together. The band gigged solidly over the next few months playing small clubs and bars in LA. It is often said that if you can win audiences over in LA, you can win them anywhere. Reaction was strong and Aaron and Ben felt it was time to return to the studio. This time however, they would find a great engineer, a great studio and make the record themselves. After making several calls, Aaron was given the name of a young engineer who was highly regarded and had recently worked with some big artists. His name was Rob Brill. After listening to demos Rob called his manager and said he was excited about the music and would love to work on the project. The wheels were set in motion. Aaron and Rob would produce, Rob would engineer and with the help of some kindhearted people the record would get made in world class facilities. That was the aim....and that's what happened. next |
