THE BIRTH OF OCIANIC 2003During 2002, a gap began to grow between the youngest of the group and the others. Communication between Jason and the band became distant. His frustration in delays signing a new deal eventually led to a split between himself and the band. (We wish Jason all the best and much success in his musical pursuits.) Once again the three forged ahead, determined not to give up their dream that had seemed so close at times to becoming a reality. The band spent time together in Melbourne in January 2003 writing and experimenting with good friend and drummer Karl Lewis. Basic tracks to several new songs were laid down and feeling encouraged and renewed from the break, Aaron and Ben returned to LA to begin planning the next steps. In March, Aaron, Ben and Russell felt that the name Supanatural no longer fit. Finally after much searching and deliberation, inspired by the many trips they had made flying over the Pacific Ocean, the name Ocianic was born. Receiving a living allowance from Warner Bros., the band was able to set up their studio in a small apartment in Hollywood and began writing and recording new demos. At the end of April 2003, dealing directly now with CEO Tom Whalley, the band nervously handed in three new songs. Tom called a week or so later to say that the new material was the best so far and that he felt the band had found an exciting new direction. On May 9, joined by many friends and supporters, Ocianic performed in Hollywood for the first time at a small club called 'The Joint'. The band ended the half hour set with a first ever performance of the song 'You', a heartfelt piece Aaron had written at the end of 2003 as a thank-you to God for helping the band survive and giving them another chance at realizing their dream of making a record and touring the US. Speaking of universal love that can be applied to anything that's held dear in life, the song captured the attention of Warner Bros. business affairs boss Chip McLean. He was in the audience and conveyed to the band that he was blown away by the tune. Chip had been a big supporter and friend to the guys during their development at Warner Bros. and this encouragement meant alot. From May to August, Aaron and Ben continued to submit new songs and demo's to the record company. Their hope's of ending the development stage with Warner's and closing the deal began to fade. It was proving impossible to get feedback from Tom or anyone with decision making power at the company. next |
